“I chose the @ symbol because it made sense—someone was ‘at’ some other location,” Tomlinson later recalled. “And it was unlikely to appear in anyone’s name, so it wouldn’t cause confusion.”
This elegant solution—username@computer—remains the fundamental structure of email addresses even today, over five decades later.
The First Electronic Mail
The content of the very first email message has been lost to history. By Tomlinson’s own admission, it was likely nothing more profound than random characters—”QWERTYUIOP” or something similarly mundane—sent from one machine to another in the same room, simply to test if the system worked.
“The test messages were entirely forgettable,” Tomlinson said in a 2009 NPR interview, reflecting the pragmatic engineering approach that characterised much of early computing innovation. “I have, therefore, forgotten them.”
What made this test transformative wasn’t the content but the implication: for the first time, electronic messages could travel between separate computers on a network.
From Experiment to Communication Revolution
Initially, Tomlinson’s creation barely caused a ripple. His supervisor reportedly cautioned him not to make too much noise about the experiment, concerned it might appear they were diverting attention from their contracted projects.
However, email’s practical utility proved irresistible. By 1973, studies indicated that electronic mail comprised 75% of all ARPANET traffic, demonstrating how quickly users gravitated toward this efficient form of communication.

Despite the rise of instant messaging, social networks, and video conferencing, email remains remarkably resilient. Its asynchronous nature, flexibility, and universal compatibility have ensured its continued relevance in an ever-evolving digital ecosystem.
Email has also spawned entire industries—from email marketing platforms that drive e-commerce to sophisticated security systems protecting against the modern scourge of phishing attacks. Even the problem of unwanted messages—spam—has its origins in the early days of email, with the first documented unsolicited mass email sent in 1978 by a Digital Equipment Corporation marketing representative.
The Humble Pioneer
Perhaps most remarkable about this communication revolution is how little Tomlinson personally profited from it. He never patented email or sought to monetise his creation, viewing it simply as a logical extension of existing technology rather than a breakthrough worthy of proprietary protection.
“I’m not an entrepreneur,” Tomlinson explained in later interviews. “I was just solving a problem that needed solving.”
When Tomlinson passed away in 2016 at age 74, tributes poured in from around the world, recognising his outsized—if unintentional—impact on modern life. His passing prompted reflection on how a single character, chosen for its practicality by an unassuming engineer, fundamentally altered how humanity communicates.
The @ Legacy Continues
In an age where digital communication platforms emerge and disappear with startling rapidity, Tomlinson’s creation has demonstrated remarkable staying power. Despite predictions of email’s demise dating back decades, its fundamental utility ensures its continued relevance in both professional and personal contexts.
